You may have seen the “baked milk challenge” being recommended for people who have a cow milk allergy.
So it turns out that many patients with cow’s milk allergy can tolerate extensively heated or baked forms of milk that can progress to tolerance of less extensively heated forms of milk over time. There was recently a retrospective study including 187 patients with milk allergy who were followed for a median of about four years after a baked milk challenge found that the majority were able to advance to less processed forms of milk over time.
However, dietary advancement was not always successful, particularly in those who required treatment during the initial baked milk challenge, and reactions were common. Patients should receive counseling about the risks of dietary advancement and how to manage reactions. Further data is needed to determine the optimal approach to diet advancement in these patients.
